Save the Date for the 26th annual SCACCA Conference

November 19th to 21st, join us at the gorgeous Kingston Plantation http://www.kingstonplantation.com in Myrtle Beach for what promises to be the biggest and best SCACCA conference yet.  This year we are teaming up with the North Carolina Animal Federation to bring colleagues from both Carolinas together for a few days of training, networking, and the beach. Register here.

Also new this year a third track, Shelter Design and Construction.  Is your shelter in need of a makeover or just a bulldozer?  Architects from around the country who specialize in animal shelters will be speaking on topics ranging from conception to construction.

Of course, tracks for ACO's and shelter staff will be strong as well and the line up of national speakers is spectacular.  Click here for the brief overview and check back soon for the full conference line up.

Hurricane Season Reminder

Hurricane season is quickly on its way. Don’t forget to remind pet owners in your area to be prepared to deal with their pets should an emergency arrive.

As we have seen recently in other States, you can never be too prepared. With the number of hurricanes predicted this year, it is only safe to assume that South Carolina will feel the affects of at least one storm on some level. It can’t be said enough that citizens and shelters need to be prepared and have some type of plan in place should we get hit by a storm.

Hurricane preparedness brochures are available for large and small domestic animals through SCACCA. If you would like some for your facility and to hand out to the public, please contact Marli Drum at 803-776-7387 and those will be sent to your organization.

In case you didn't’t know….our State law (Section 47-3-55 (D)) states that an owner redeeming a cat or dog “must elect to have a microchip implanted”. The Attorney General’s office looked at this at the request of Spartanburg Humane Society several years ago and determined that shelters could indeed enforce mandatory micro-chipping of all cats/dogs redeemed to their owners. If you are not already doing so, you should. It is a great way to track and identify pets and help them find their way back to their homes in the future. There are also a variety of good micro-chipping programs available to shelters that will make installing such a program easy.
